Abstract

A new ant species, Aphaenogaster cardenai, found in Ventas de Cárdenas (Ciudad Real, Spain) is described. It belongs to the subgenus Attomyrtrza and is characterised by the great development of epinotal spines, scape pilosity and shining teguments, which differentiates it from A. ovaticeps and A. splendida, to which it resembles at first glance. Also, Leptothorax glaber Santschi, 1925 is established as synonymous to L. niger Forel, 1894 after the examination of unique worker type material; the absence of pilosity, the main stated diffcrence, is probably accidental and other differences fall well between the limits of variation of the actual L. niger.
