Spatial configuration of mixed groups in Red Deer (Cervus elaphus L.) during the rut
The spatial organization of mixed groups in Red Deer during the rut was studied in the central Sierra Morena (Córdoba – Spain). The study is carried out in terms of age-sex classes, and was based on direct observation and video recordings. Movement order appears to be linear with the adult male in the rearmost position and the hind in the front of the group. Spatial configuration of the female classes was similar to that which appears in female groups, with regard to the three aspects studied: movement order, relative positions of age-sex classes, and proximity relationships. The presence of the adult male adds some modifications which are discussed.
