Abstract

Crossostomus sobrali sp. n. (Osteichthyes, Zoarcidae) caught in the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) and its relationship with tbe genus Maynea
The sampling period covered February and March 1987, with 19 stations distnbuted along the northern coast of the Channel from 68º 33′ W to 67º 08′ W, depths ranging from intertidal leve1 until the center of the Channel (120 m). A new species of eelpout (Zoarcidae) Crossostornus sobrali is described from a single specimen caught on the Ushuaia Peninsula. Its taxonomic position is analyzed and its relationship with the genus Maynea studied. Circumoral dermal fringes and lips with vertical striations are judged to be better diagnostic characters for the genus, than the pelvic fins which are sometimes absent.
