Abstract

Earthworms present in the laurel forest of Tenerife (Canary Islands)
A total of 18 species (16 Lumbricidae and two Acanthodrilidae) and one subspecies (Allolobophora rosea bimastoides) have been identified of which, Allolobophora georgii and Dendrobaena byblica are new citations, not only for the Canary Islands but for the entire Macaronesian Region. The distribution of each species is presented. Noteworthy is the pancity of earthworms in the laurel forest on the south side of the Island which corresponds to just a few widely distributed insular species. In addition, several aspects relating to the autoecology and biogeography of the different species are discussed revealing that the majonty of the different species behave as neutrophiles and bear a clear affinity with the European fauna and to a lesser degree with the American fauna.
