Abstract

Habitat prejerences and activity in the ring-tailed coati (Nasua nasua) at El Bagual Ecological Reserve (Argentina)
Ring-tailed coati activity levels and habitat use were estimated by track counts on four habitat types at El Bagual Ecological Reserve, northeasthern Argentina during 1989-1990. Activity index and habitat use index were applied from repetitive readings of 56 3m2 sample plots. Coatis were not recorded using high-humid forests, nor bushy savannas at El Bagual Reserve, but they were recorded in early-sera1 forests and low woods, prefemng the latter according to variances from use indexes. No monthly or seasonal use differences were recorded. Activity levels were higher in low woods possibly related to a preference for this habitat.
