Resumen

First record of Lyconus brachycolus Holt & Byrne, 1906 (Pisces, Merlucciidae) in the Southern Atlantic 0cean
Lyconus brachycolus Holt & Byrne, 1906 is considered a rare species only referenced until now in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its systematic position is litigious and its relationship with other binomial is not clear. The work deals with these matters, comparing the literature with material lent by the Museu Municipal do Funchal and two specimens caught in the South Eastern Atlantic (Namibian coast). These are the first record of L. obrachycolus in the southern hemisphere. Clear evidence allows to consider Macruronus caninus Maul, 1951 in the sinonimy of L. brachycolus and to prefer its inclusion in the family Merlucciidae instead of Macrouridae.
