Resumen

Species-area relationship in a neotropical freshwaterfish community
The relation between the size of the area and the number of species of a freshwater fish community is discussed in this paper. Samples were taken from 11 pools of different size in the East of Bolivia, from August to December 1985. Different types of fishing devices wereused to know the total ichthiological composition of each pool. The relation species-area fitted with the equation S = 0.447 x A0.203 (where S represented the number of species and A the surface of the area), with a coefficient of correlation between variables of 0.751 (p < = 0.01). The ecological meaning of the coefficients was discussed. They enabled to consider the studied pools as independent entities where the frecuency of apparition of the different fish species was directly related to the size of pools.
