Response of the white-collared swift Streptoprocne zonaris to researcher’s disturbance

The potential effects of research activity are less understood than other anthropogenic disturbances on nesting bird colonies, especially in swift species. The aim of this study was to describe the behavior of the white-collared swift Streptoprocne zonaris during its breeding season in the face of the disturbance caused by researchers within three nesting colonies in south-center Cuba. The breeders’ response (nest unattendance, permanence or defense) was related to the breeding phase (nest construction, incubation, nestling), while nest content, clutch size or the chicks’ development level showed no significant effects. The nest neglect time after the researcher’s disturbance averaged 23.3 minutes. The breeding success was not influenced by the response to the presence of the researcher’s or by the nest neglect time. The fact that the presence of the researchers did not influence the reproductive performance of the birds does not diminish the need for an analysis of the ethics that should prevail in studies at nesting colonies.
