Excentricus planicornis is a highly specialised mirid true bug associated with shrub ecotones where it feeds on a narrow set of wild rose species. Its highly fragmented distribution and presumed low dispersal ability make it an interesting species in which to study phylogeographic structure. We analysed mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences from 96 specimens sampled across seven regions in Europe to assess genetic differentiation. Genetic diversity was low, with intraspecific Kimura-2-parameter distances ranging from 0 to 0.01 %. All sequences clustered into a single BIN, and a star-like haplotype network comprising six haplotypes indicated a recent population expansion, possibly following post-glacial recolonisation. The widespread occurrence of a dominant haplotype across Europe suggests ongoing or recent gene flow, contrasting with our expectation based on the species ecology and patchy host plant distribution. Although high-elevation and peripheral populations might still be vulnerable, E. planicornis overall seems to be a resilient specialist capable of persisting in highly fragmented landscapes.Cita
