Abstract

A new Lower Devonian faunal assemblage from Catalonia (NE Spain)

A level of grey-greenish shales, becoming yellow when weathered, which outcrops in the northern slope of a track in Bruguès (W of Gava) yields a faunal assemblage of very small shells showing very close affinities with some bohemian Devonian assemblages. The fauna, which is indicative of a Lower Devonian age, is mainly composed of brachiopods which are typical of a BA4-5 position. The brachiopod fauna includes Orbiculoidea sp., Plectodonta (Plectodonta) mimica (Barrande), an undetermined strophochonetid chonetid, Jacetanella bruguesensis nov. gen., nov. sp., cf. Plicanoplites sp. and an undetermined (?) lissatrypid.
